While the pool is long gone, the entrance to St Andrew’s Brine Baths still stands. Now known as St Richard’s House it is home to the town council and Droitwich Spa Heritage Centre, which incorporates the Salt Museum.
Another permanent exhibition there is Droitwich Calling, which tells the history of the BBC’s transmitting station at Wychbold, and how it made the town famous (see ‘Buildings’). Old equipment was saved from the scrap heap and restored, including a 1940s transmitting control desk.
Droitwich Calling was opened by two stars of the world’s longest running radio drama, The Archers. Patricia Greene, who has played matriarch Jill Archer in the BBC soap for an astonishing 63 years, was joined by Hedli Niklaus (aka Kathy Perks).
The Heritage Centre also displays faces reconstructed from Roman skulls.
