After dining at The Chequers you’ll be ready to take on the world because it’s owned by the man who used to cook up pre-match meals for the likes of Wayne Rooney, Bryan Robson and David Beckham.

Roger Narbett was the England football team chef for 21 years from 1989 to 2010, serving up premier league grub as he travelled with the squad to many European Championships and World Cup finals.

Speaking from Germany during the 2006 World Cup, he said: “It’s fantastic working for the England squad. Being a football fan myself, I feel I’m doing my bit for the team. I feel very proud to be here.”

Framed photos harking back to Roger’s time with the England team adorn some walls at The Chequers, in Cutnall Green, and more memorabilia is in a separate room, aptly called the Players Lounge.

A young Roger signed schoolboy forms with Aston Villa but did not make the grade as a professional footballer, unlike his younger brother Jon, who played for Shrewsbury Town.

But Villa’s loss was, ultimately, England’s gain.
