There was a time when pubs were a place where men could put the world to rights, using the most colourful language, without fear of being overheard by children.

Of course these days most pubs welcome families and patrons are expected to behave appropriately.

In October 2019, the Fox & Goose pub on the Westlands estate laid down the law to customers in the most extreme fashion.

One night, the brewery owner popped in for a pint and overheard someone swearing. He was so angry that he shut the pub down – for good. Really. It had only reopened seven weeks earlier having being closed for years.

It was reported that in 2017 the Samuel Smith brewery had issued a chain-wide ban on the use of profanity in its pubs.
