Grand National legend Red Rum galloped into Droitwich to officially open a William Hill betting shop in Gurney’s Lane, just off the High Street.
The winner of the 1973, 1974 and 1977 races (and runner-up in ’75 and ’76) was accompanied by madcap TV pundit John McCririck.
Always loved Red Rum. What date was this picture taken?
Hi Bernadette. Good question, a glaring omission from the story! I believe Red Rum came to Droitwich in the early 1990s (I was in the betting shop). The picture here is not from that day. I’ve taken it from my paper’s archives but I’m afraid it’s not dated.
