Priory House, a 16th century building in Friar Street, was home to the wealthy and influential Carbury family in the 1700s.
Sir Richard Carbury was encouraged to marry his cousin Lucretia in order to claim his inheritance. Lucretia, however, was an unwilling bride and stabbed Sir Richard to death in a small room at the rear of the building.
It was in this room that a spirit terrified a guest in 1875. It is said Sir Richard visits the house every 50 years and should be due again April 14, 2025.
Ghostly friars have also been seen in the building, as well as in the nearby Norbury Theatre.
