The two hills (see separate entry) are not the unusual things about the Westlands roundabout. A sign pointing the way to the housing estate is fixed to a lamppost at a height of about 8ft.
The explanation dates back to the mid-1980s when the name of the estate was changed from Boycott to Westlands. It was originally named after a farm within the development but councillors felt it sent a message that it was a place to be avoided.
However, some residents were not happy and took a paint brush to many of the new ‘Westlands’ signs – more than once. And so the sign on the roundabout was raised out of reach and has stayed there ever since.
